Shorts for a friend (kind of)

Home sewing project: shorts and pattern

It’s taken me much longer than I thought it would to get these shorts finished. I picked out this New Look pattern a couple of months ago as it looked relatively simple and I own similar shorts which are very much loved.

Originally I was making these spotty shorts for me but that plan didn’t quite work out, hence Kind of in the title of this post. I thought I’d measured everything accurately so launched into cutting and assembling. I tested the sizing throughout and it seemed that they would fit…until sewing the first of the side seams, and lo and behold they were far too small. Happily I have a lot of skinny friends so these are about to be gifted to my friend Faye.

Back to the make, I chose this fabric from Ray Stitch on the Essex Road in Islington, London. I ordered online but will have to make a visit in person as it looks amazing. My parcel arrived beautifully packaged and was a real treat to open.

I usually pick a matching thread but this time opted for something to compliment the colour of the polka dots which contrasted the brown fabric.

For the first time, I amended the pattern leaving off the belt which seemed dated, and hemming the legs rather than using the turn-up style finish.

This project was a little hit and miss with the pockets, zips and darts all being new or under practiced skills. But as my first attempt at adult clothes for a good 20 years I can walk away feeling pleased.

But they are completed, I’ve enjoyed making them and have learnt a few important lessons along the way:

1. Double and triple check measurements (esp for US produced patterns)
2. With more expensive fabric a trial run in muslin is definitely worth the effort
3. I need to get more practice with zips
4. Pockets are nothing to be scared of

At least one of these can be ticked off thanks to a very thoughtful birthday present from some school friends. I definitely need to read chapter one Patterns 101 in more detail.
